My Small Backroom Office

Today I’m showing you my small backroom office. Or that’s what I call it. Some would call this space a mud room or anteroom because it is by the backdoor.

This is my small backroom office.
I see I need to dust the black tables!

This is the dictionary’s definition of a mudroom:

A small room or entryway where footwear and outerwear can be removed before entering a house.

Two Black Tables/Desks:

This is where the two black tables/desks ended up during the move, and they stayed here. I have a small printer that’s supposed to be delivered today. Kasi is probably tired of me forwarding things to copy for me!

This room has a south-facing window that I’ll get around to adding curtains to eventually, though the blinds do the trick. A little decorative curtain will also help with the summer sun.

Red Chairs From Pier 1:

My Small Backroom Office is at the back of the house.

As you probably remember, this red chair is one of two I bought from Pier 1 ages ago. I’ve moved them so many times now! They’re handy and comfortable little chairs. I do miss the Pier 1 store!

I just remembered that I have a couple of red cushions that should fit them. I’ll dig them out to make them even more comfortable.

When this room was empty before I moved in, it didn’t seem like a big space. But when the furniture was being carried in from the moving truck, I began to see what a little gem this room was.

Please forgive the wood and various things I forgot to move before I took photos in here. Some of the wood leaning in the corner is wood Kendra is adding to the baseboards. The other stuff just landed there and I haven’t gotten around to moving it yet.

I’ve only added one piece of wall decor and a clock on the walls. The other wall decor is layered on the desks/tables for a casual look.

Beverage Tubs As Decor:

A beverage tub with washboards and a plant.

I like to use beverage tubs for everything except beverages! This one has a washboard and a plant in it.

Sometimes all you need for a simple home office is a corner like this one. It solves the problem of where to allocate things that belong to an office without taking up a lot of room.

Otherwise, I’d be hunting for files or tape or something office-related because I put it somewhere but forgot exactly where. Having an office means you have a dedicated space for things like that.

This is a closer view of mu small backroom office.

I rolled the little plastic storage drawers underneath one table, and as you can see, it fit perfectly. Since there is no other storage for craft supplies in here, it’s where I’m storing things like that.

Layered Artwork:

I’ve added layered artwork, as I have in other rooms. You don’t have to worry about putting nail holes in the wall when layering artwork, and it’s easy to change the look when you get bored with it.

It’s a great idea for renters.

A plant in this room.

This plant, called Philodendron Brasil, gets a little sun, but just a few slanted rays. So far the sunlight hasn’t been detrimental to it. This plant is one of my favorite plants from the Philodendron family.

Christmas Birds & Lamb:

Below are the little Christmas birds I added to this space. I haven’t decorated much for the holidays, but I like them perched here. They make me smile with their red and green caps.

My Small Backroom Office has two Christmas birds for the holidays.

And below is probably my very favorite Christmas decoration. The little lamb I found at a grocery store years ago has been broken and glued back together once. I’m trying hard not to break it again!

Mother-of-pearl lamp on the desk and my little white Christmas lamb.

It sits in front of my mother-of-pearl table lamp I got from Target a year or so ago. Target is my favorite place to find lamps. The lamps I purchased from Target were well-packed and assembled except for adding the lampshade.

I hope you enjoyed the tour of the small backroom office in the house I call Mamie. There are still a few rooms to show you, but I have to work slowly on getting these rooms “showable.”

  1. I like the L-shaped arrangement of the desk. Just a great little space and so useful.

  2. I miss Pier 1 also. I think you can still ship them online. At least I think so anyway. I laughed when you said you use the beverage container for everything but beverages. For some reason that just-tickled my funnny bone, lol! I love how your office has formed out!

    1. I meant shop not ship

  3. Brenda, Look at all you have accomplished! Amazing and creative work, beautiful style and such a comforting, welcoming home. Mamie is a blessing to you. To have wonderful daughters and friends to achieve all this is such a gift. Thank you for each post sharing the progress. Sherry B

Thank you for sharing Mamie with us. She is delightful and I am thoroughly enjoying her transformation.

  6. Oh my, Brenda! You’ve made this little space so special! I just love it! I used to use my mud room as an office/mudroom/dropping zone, but I finally go all the unneeded furniture out of the 4th bedroom next to it and moved the office furniture in there. I don’t use it much because it’s colder back there with the north wind hitting that side of the house but it’s a work in progress and will never be as cute as yours has turned out. And I see you solved the mystery of the missing button jars! That’s a lotta buttons!

  7. Mamie has so many unique “spots” for you to play with. Love this little space … makes a very enjoyable and bright area for your office. So glad to see you having so much fun getting Mamie all dressed up.

  8. What a bright and lovely office. Mine is ugly. It’s in a back bedroom. My husband moved his computer in and well…. that took care of pretty. LOL.

  9. Looks great! An office area does keep you organized. I’ve seen them nestled inside closets, too.

  15. Hi Brenda- In the past I could find lists of blogs that you recommended. Now I’m not sure where they are. I’m looking for blogs on decorating, recipes maybe, houseplants, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Linda in Keno, Oregon

    1. I was looking for those suggestions when I was searching for a cabbage soup recipe yesterday. There was a list of paint colors to use with Fiesta. I miss that one and one about a small red cottage. Neither one is active now.

    2. Lovely Reads blogs is at the bottom left.
