How to Create a Cozy, Functional Home Office in a Small Room

I’ll show you how to create a cozy, functional home office in a small room. In my case, it is my little back room overlooking the backyard.

Creating a small home office in a little back room is all about making the most of the space you have while keeping it comfortable, organized, and inviting.

Even the smallest room can become a pleasant place to work, read, pay bills, or pursue creative hobbies.

You don’t need a large desk or lots of furniture to create a functional workspace. The secret is to think vertically, choose furniture carefully, and give every little corner a purpose.

1. Choose the Right Spot for Your Desk:

• Place your desk against a wall or beneath a window to conserve floor space.
• Consider a narrow writing desk instead of a traditional, bulky office desk.
• If the room is particularly small, use a corner desk to make use of an otherwise awkward area.
• Position your computer where you can enjoy natural light without having glare on your screen.

A small desk with drawers can add extra storage without requiring another piece of furniture.

I positioned the two black tables that I’m using as desks under the window. There is lots of natural light there, plus there’s light from the window in the door.

2. Make Use of Vertical Wall Space:

When floor space is limited, look upward!

• Install floating shelves above your desk.
• Use a wall organizer for notebooks, mail, and office supplies.
• Hang a bulletin board for reminders and inspiration.
• Add a small wall-mounted file holder.
• Use attractive baskets to conceal miscellaneous supplies.

This keeps your desktop from getting cluttered while adding personality to the room.

3. Choose Furniture that Serves More than One Purpose:

In a small back room, every piece of furniture should earn its place.

Consider:

• A narrow desk with built-in storage.
• A small filing cabinet that doubles as a printer stand.
• A bookcase with baskets for office supplies.
• A comfortable chair that tucks completely beneath the desk.
• A rolling cart you can move when you need extra floor space.

Avoid oversized office furniture that makes the room feel crowded.

Instead of a heavy desk, I chose dining tables, which offer lots of space underneath. And my desk chair is a red indoor/outdoor chair I bought from Pier 1 many years ago in Texas.

4. Create a Cozy Atmosphere:

Your home office doesn’t have to look like a corporate workspace. Make it feel like a natural extension of your home.

A few decorating ideas include:

• Use soft, soothing paint colors such as sage green, warm cream, or pale beige.
• Add a pretty table lamp for warm lighting.
• Bring in a couple of small houseplants.
• Hang artwork or a favorite framed print.
• Add a small rug to make the room feel more finished.
• Use a pretty fabric-covered storage box for things you don’t want sitting out.

A touch of vintage decor, a favorite photograph, or a little vase of flowers can make the room feel especially welcoming.

5. Keep the Desktop Organized:

A small workspace can quickly become overwhelmed with papers, pens, chargers, and miscellaneous items.

Try these simple organizing ideas:

• Keep only everyday necessities on the desk.
• Use a desktop organizer for pens and notepads.
• Store paperwork in labeled folders.
• Attach cord organizers beneath the desk.
• Keep infrequently used items in baskets or cabinets.

The more open desktop space you have, the more comfortable your workspace will feel.

6. Don’t Forget the Lighting and Finishing Touches:

Good lighting makes a little office feel brighter and more comfortable. Combine natural daylight with a desk lamp and overhead lighting.

If the room has a window, use lightweight curtains to soften the space without blocking too much light.

You might also add a comfortable cushion, a small footrest, or a pretty throw over your chair.

A Simple Layout for a Small Back Room:

Here is one practical arrangement:

• Back wall: Place a narrow desk with floating shelves above it.
• One side wall: Add a slim bookcase or small filing cabinet.
• Opposite wall: Keep it relatively open, perhaps with one piece of artwork.
• Window area: Add a small plant or floor lamp.
• Under the desk: Use a rolling storage cart or tucked-away basket.

I used plastic rolling drawers to organize and store craft supplies. And rolled it underneath one of the black desks.

The goal is to leave enough open floor space that the room doesn’t feel like a storage closet.

You can make it practical without sacrificing the cozy, welcoming feeling of home.

This room has a south-facing window. A decorative curtain will also help block the summer sun, and the window looks out over the large backyard.

When this room was empty before I moved in, it didn’t seem like a big enough space. But when the furniture was being carried in from the moving truck, I began to see what a little gem this room is.

I’ve only added one piece of wall decor and a clock. I layered the other wall decor on the desks/tables for a more casual look.

Using Beverage Tubs As Indoor Decor:

I like to use beverage tubs for everything except beverages! This one has washboards and a plant.

Sometimes all you need for a simple home office is a little corner like this one. It solves the problem of where to put office stuff without taking up much room.

Layered Artwork:

I’ve added layered artwork on one of the black desks, as I have in other rooms. You don’t have to worry about putting nail holes in the wall when layering artwork. And it’s easy to change the look when you get bored.

Layering wall decor is a great idea for renters who aren’t allowed to put nail holes in the wall.

This plant, called Philodendron Brasil, gets a few slanted rays of sun. So far, the sunlight hasn’t harmed it. This plant is one of my favorite plants from the Philodendron family.

The houseplant sits in front of my mother-of-pearl table lamp I got from Target a year or so ago. Target is my favorite place to find lamps. The lamps I bought from Target were well packed and assembled, except for the lampshade.

A small home office can become one of the loveliest little rooms in your house. Rather than thinking of it as a cramped back room, think of it as a quiet retreat where you can concentrate, organize your thoughts, read, write, and enjoy a little time to yourself.
