Today in Sunday Snippets for 12.15.24…

Yesterday was rainy and overcast. I put on some piano music and sat in my living room, thinking of past Christmas holidays.

My favorite holidays were when the girls were young, and we had a ritual of making homemade ornaments for the tree the day after Thanksgiving. The time we spend at home with loved ones before Christmas is perhaps better than the actual day.

I suppose because we didn’t celebrate holidays when I was a child, it became easy for me to revert to that habit once the girls were grown.

What I’m Watching:

In Snippets 12.15.24, I'm currently Watching Hidden on Acorn TV.
Acorn TV

The series Hidden stars Sian Reese-Williams as Detective Inspector Cadi John and Sion Alun Davies as DS Owen Vaughan. The discovery of the body of a young woman on the banks of a river shakes the lives of DI Cadi John and DS Owen Vaughan.

Its original Welsh name, Craith, is also known as Hidden. The show is about the abduction of young women and family bonds in North Wales.

As they discover the girl’s identity, it seems she may be just one of several young women who have gone missing in the area.

There are 3 seasons of Hidden on Acorn TV.

Do any of you also watch Acorn TV or BritBox? I can’t recall who suggested that I watch these British shows, but I was immediately hooked!

What I’m Reading:

I finished reading this book last night, so tonight I’ll start another. I don’t know which one yet.

The novel The Widow by Fiona Barton
Amazon

The Widow by Fiona Barton centers around a couple, Jean and Glen.

Jean thought she had hit the jackpot when Glen first noticed her. They married, but no children came, and Jean desperately wanted one.

Jean doesn’t know the real Glen because he hides it from her. To Jean, he’s just dependable Glen, who can’t give her children but cares for her every need.

Then she discovers that he has secrets unearthed when a little girl goes missing. At first, he manages to defend himself, but she has a hunch he isn’t being transparent with her or the police. Years pass.

Then the police, who worked doggedly for four years to catch him, find the evidence they need. And her world crumbles.

Thereโ€™s a lot Jean hasnโ€™t said over the years. She was too busy being the perfect wife, standing by her man while living with the accusing glares and the anonymous harassment.
ย
Now, her husband is dead, and thereโ€™s no reason to stay quiet. Some people want to hear her story. They want to know what it was like to live with such an evil man. And if she was complicit.
ย
The truthโ€”thatโ€™s all anyone wants. However, Jean has learned one lesson in the last few years: She can make people believe anything.

Do you like to read a book before bed? I guess I’ve always read during these hours. It relaxes me, and I enjoy reading. One of the greatest gifts I ever gave myself was learning to read as a little girl.

It was, in many ways, my salvation. Reading is far more gratifying than checking social media to entertain myself.

I hope you enjoyed Sunday Snippets 12.15.24.

  1. Britbox & Acorn are my favorites. It’s interesting to see how some of the shows age well and others don’t. Sometimes the pager or cellphones are a dead giveaway to the age of the show. It’s interesting to watch how women started moving up in the ranks & business world. I really enjoy the countryside too.

I have watched one or two series that are set in Sweden or Norway but I don’t enjoy those as much as the shows in England.

Detective or garden shows are my favorites. And of course, some of the comedies

I sure wish I could travel back to England again but I can’t get around like I used to.

  2. Eileen in Fla. says:

I so understand your statement that Reading can be a person’s salvation.

  3. I used to read a lot before going to bed. It was relaxing, and Iโ€™d read until I got too sleepy to keep my eyes open. I tend to watch you tube now a days, before falling asleep. I think thatโ€™s a lovely tradition you had with your girls to make home made Christmas ornaments together. Iโ€™ll bet they will always remember and cherish those memories you created for them! Thank you for continuing to write the Sunday snippets. I think thatโ€™s always been my favorite.

  4. Yes Brenda I read every night before going to sleep. I have a pillow specifically for that purchased from overstock. Most of my books are from our local reuzit shop here in PA, or occasionally ordered from Thriftbooks. My Husky lays on the bed when I am reading, when I am finished reading she curls up inside the pillow. The reuzit shoppe books are priced from .50 to the highest being 3.00, bought quite a few books yesterday.
