Sunday Snippets 8/20/23
Yesterday Steve, Lisa, and I went to Ron and Pat’s 70th wedding anniversary gathering at their church. There were various cakes and snacks, etc. Along with punch.
Ron and Pat’s family was ,there, from hither and yon. A big family so happy to see their parents, 87 and 89, alive and celebrating. Laughing, conversing, and having a good time.
A big screen showed them through the years, 70 years of marriage and a courtship before. Along with the family as three children were born and raised.
Ron told me the other day that when he goes, he wants to be working on one of his ships.
When it’s his time, he said he wants to leave this world and fall forward over whatever ship he’s currently working on.
That would be the best way for him to go. Right there with his beloved ships in the “shipyard.”
Such truly good people. I’m so glad they’re my neighbors.
There other residents there, some I haven’t met because I can’t get out and about. All ages. With walkers and canes and the lot. (I’m finding that the more British shows I watch, the more I fall back into their vernacular.)
It’s hot as a skillet out there and quite humid. Hopefully I’ll only have to go out and water later today. My ankle hurt all night even with the compression sock on.
Yesterday Greg told me that I should probably go back in the boot for a while.
Things, right now anyway, have stopped improving on that front. I can keep the pain at bay if I basically do nothing. But if I get up and move around much, the pain is back.
The Garden:
The morning glories are almost at the top of the light pole now. They finally started to bloom this week.
Back in 2012 when I broke my ankle taking a photo of the first one of that season, it wasn’t even mid-July yet.
I don’t know why they’re blooming so late this year. Maybe because of all the rain we’ve had.
And the zinnias, always one of my favorite flowers, are popping out with blooms of all colors. Zinnias are such a simple flower that germinate easily and puts on quite a show.
What I’m Reading:
I’m reading the book “Wrong Place Wrong Time” by Gillian McAllister.
Can you stop a murder after it’s already happened?
It is midnight on the morning of Halloween, and Jen anxiously waits up for her 18-year-old son, Todd, to return home. But worries about his broken curfew transform into something much more dangerous when Todd finally emerges from the darkness.
As Jen watches through the window, she sees her funny, seemingly happy teenage son stab a total stranger.
She doesn’t know who the victim is, or why Todd has committed such a devastating act of violence. All she knows is that her life, and Todd’s, have been shattered.
After her son is taken into custody, Jen falls asleep in despair. But when she wakes up…it is yesterday. The murder has not happened yet—and there may be a chance to stop it.
Each morning, when Jen wakes, she is further back in the past, first weeks, then years, before the murder. And Jen realizes that somewhere in the past lies the trigger for Todd’s terrible crime. And it is her mission to find it, and prevent it from taking place.
What I’m Watching:
(Lewis):
“Together with his cool, cerebral partner Hathaway (Laurence Fox), Lewis tackles murder and mayhem in the seemingly-perfect academic haven of Oxford.
“Together, they struggle with procedural dilemmas and existential questions about their futures–on the force and in their personal lives.“
I already mentioned that I’m watching “Lewis” on BritBox.
It’s funny, years ago I would probably have found shows like this “quaint” but uninteresting. How we change and evolve.
This show is just my cup of tea at this time in my life. Good old mysteries that keep you guessing.
And the answer is always uncovered before the end of the episode. Tied up like a neat bow on a present.
Ivy:
And of course I must show a photo of Ivy. This is how she looks sleeping behind my chair in the living room. She prefers to be on her back.
My funny hunny bunny.
Cat In A Basket:
Yesterday, Lisa said she couldn’t find her calico cat, Lolly, anywhere. Finally she found her in a basket on her kitchen counter.
(Ivy can’t jump on my kitchen counter because she’s too heavy).
You know how cats are. They don’t care if you’re calling for them. But dogs are different. You call for them and they come running.
I know from experience that if I call Ivy and she doesn’t want to come out from wherever she is, she won’t. And then when I become somewhat frantic, I’ll call Steve.
If Steve is home, he’ll come walking in my door. And without him saying a word, Ivy will come running.

Hello Brenda,
I don’t know if you remember me. I started reading your blog back in 2010.
back then I was a widow raising a soon to be kindergarten girlie.
I mailed to you a platter and a pitcher to your home in Texas.
Back then my blog was called Along a widowed road…
I’ve since closed my blog.
Fast forward and its 12 years later and my daughter just drove off the college. she is starting a culinary arts program. She is super excited.
I have now remarried, we have relocated from Southern Calif to East Tn.
My new husband adopted my daughter and life has turned out for the better, at a different pace.
I catch up on your blog once a week.
I always wonder what happened to the bloggers I used to follower and catch up on family life.
There were several mom’s
that had kids around my daughters age back in the day that were part of your community, Jen and had a little dog her husband was a pilot and she had a daughter at home, another mom had two school age daughters and I think had moved to North Carolina and she lived thrifting. Time has sure flown by.
ps.. have you thought of intermitten fasting to help with the inflammation your experiencing with your ankle?
I ask this as I started this July 15th, 2023 as I had such difficulty moving around, as soon as my body started to heal, the inflammation was almost gone. All from changing up my eating window.
I follow Jin Stephens on Spotify called Intermitten Fasting stories. Its trily changed my wholw perspective on the body and healing, eating. She has a book you can purchase on Amazon, called, “Fast, Feast, Repeat.”
Anyways, glad I could pop by and say hello.
God bless, Viola

You’ve built a nice community of friends, and it’s great that you were able to attend their anniversary party. Pictures of Ivy always bring a smile to my face!
So glad you got to go to the celebration and even meet some new neighbors!! So sorry you are still in pain…I guess all we can do is learn how to live in the ways our bodies have changed in our older years. Still learning too here.
70 years! Wow that is amazing! They sounds like a wonderful couple.
I am happy that you have such a lovely community there Brenda.
That book sounds ingesting. As for Lewis, I love that show. I watched it years ago I believe on PBS.
I hope that you stay cool the heat is really getting me down this year. I am so tired of it being hot I cannot wait to sleep with the windows open on cool nights, something to look forward too.
Glad you had a nice time at the anniversary party.
After a few cool days, the heat has returned here to IL. We were 103 with the heat index today. I went outside at 7 PM to water all my plants and perennials. It’s muggy – I was covered in sweat. But I’ll take this kind of weather anytime over winter.
Why does Ivy have bare patches on her belly?
I was wondering that too.
I love Miss Ivy! She is always good for a smile! I have been enjoying Endeavor on PBS Masterpiece. Endeavor is a prequel to the Inspector Morse series and it is about Detective Morse as a young man just out of Oxford and starting out as a detective. It is set in Oxford in the 1960’s and has 9 seasons. Inspector Lewis is a spinoff from the Inspector Morse series (which is a sequel to the Endeavor series, whew!).Take care of the ankle – you have come so far. It might be a bit of back and forth for a while – maybe Greg could rec some stretching/strengthening exercises? The muscles and tendons in your ankle, foot, leg(etc) have been impacted & may benefit from some targeted stretching and strengthening. Your garden is lovely!
The cat hiding in the kitchen counter basket is hilarious (and cute). I love how Ivy just eagle spreads when she snoozes. She takes the ultimate CAT NAP – LOL
Next time I grow zinnias in pots, I want lush green foliage like yours. Mine always seem to shoot up fast & look bedraggled with hardly any leaves although they bloom. I wonder why?
It’s unbearably hot here in Austin, too. We have a slight chance of rain Tuesday. Desperately need it!
Have a good week.
From Parade magazine decades ago:
Say four people are crossing a street. Two are in a crosswalk with the light in their favor; two are jaywalking. One of each is hit by a cyclist. The unhurt person in the crosswalk was in the right place at the right time; the hurt person was in the right place at the wrong time. The unhurt jaywalker was in the wrong place at the right time; the hurt jaywalker was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Plus, I want to “go out” just as my Mother did last year, in my bed. My skin is so pale, I always tell people I sleep on patterned sheets so I will be guaranteed to be found.
The heat is catching up to us here in Wi.There are warnings all week…my morning glory was doing beautifully…it is a perrenial…then a lovely wood chuck hanging around our yard came and ate every leaf…how upsetting…it is still alive but do not know if it will bloom now…I read a great book this week by Kristan Higgins…it was so good…called A Little Ray of Sunshine.. you will like it…stay cool…sorry that foot is acting up…blessings always💕
Hee hee… that picture of Ivy… oh my goodness! She is so cute, just lying there, living her best life. I love it! Congratulations to Ron and Pat! They are truly blessed to have a love that’s lasted that long, and wonderful family and friends to boot. I understand Ron wanting to die in his ship yard. It’s his happy place. I hope I go peacefully in my sleep, at a ripe old age. That book you’re reading sounds really interesting! Can you do a book review when it’s done, and tell us what you thought of it? I’m sorry you might have to go back to your walking boot. I know that must be discouraging, but remember how far you’ve come. It’s a slow process, but you’ve done so well. Your beautiful garden is proof of that. Now just sit back and relax and enjoy the view. Is there anyone you can hire to come water your plants for you?
Your garden looks so pretty! And happy to see the morning-glory blooming too.
The anniversary party sounds like it was a lovely gathering – 70 years is quite amazing.
I love the Inspector Lewis series too – we watched them on PBS when they came out years ago. The time frame, however, was current – not the 60s. Note all the cell phones – lol! I loved the Oxford environment and often the literary references made by Hathaway. Great programs!
Hope your poor ankle feels better – I’m glad Greg is still your therapist with his good advice.
It was 109 here Friday near Dallas, Texas. And a little cooler with 106 yesterday. Today is a little cooler with 103. We have had no rain this summer. I think we are behind 7 inches. My neighbor had beautiful caladiums before this heat. Between mid July and August each year the flowers and gardens usually die. Thankfully, I do not have to go out.
Ivy is beautiful and trusting.
I watch the same British show and it just ended a series on my PBS Station. I also watch several other British shows, including comedies. Your Ivy likes to sleep on her back just like my Molly. We figure it must be cooler that way in the summer. lol
It sounds like it was a lovely wedding anniversary celebration for your neighbors, with family and friends galore. Your mostly shaded garden is lovely. The photos of Ivy always make me smile, but she looks like she needs to shed a few pounds. It is very hot and “dangerous” weather here today. It has been hot all summer except for 2 or 3 days of brief stretches of “cooler” air – mostly because the dew point dips below 60 and sometimes hovers in the low 50s – ahhhhh, blessed relief! Today the dew point is at the “oppressive and miserable” level of 75 (that’s the official weather term for how it feels, I didn’t make that up!), so the current temperature outside of 86 feels like 92 and direct sunshine feels like it is burning my skin. There is little to no breeze and it is unbearable to be outside for long, even in the shade. The watering got done at 6:30 this morning, although I will lumber outside with 2 gallons of fresh cold water for the bird baths a couple of times this afternoon. The birds have been flocking to the two baths in the back yard and the water level goes down quickly with all the splashing around as well as getting rather messy looking. Who knew birds could get so dirty! Thank goodness for ceiling fans and AC. And Dove Ice Cream Bars.
It is 105 here. And I love Dove bars!
YES!! Dove icecream bars! 👍😀👍
Great picture of Ivy. Cats are just so quirky. We have one that is very aloof. But every night she comes and rests on me and sucks her toes. Has to be the back r foot, never any other toe!
As a child I had a Siamese cat who was also very aloof – but every night she came in my room and slept at the foot of my bed. I received her as a present for my eighth birthday and she lived for over 20 years. I had to take her outside every day and comb her – that was the deal because my mother had very bad allergies. The vet said that might have contributed to her general health and living so long – no hairballs anyway!
What do you feed your beautiful plants in the garden with?
I fed them with Miracle Grow when I planted them. I don’t think I’ve added any since.
Thanks! That might help mine.
I do everything with miracle grow every 2 weeks all season.
Happy Sunday, Brenda!
Ivy has a heart shape on her tummy. I love watching the British mysteries.
