6 Frugal & Unique Window Treatments
(This post was updated on May 7, 2023)
I’ve found 6 frugal and unique window treatments that you might be interested in using in your own home. It’s the imagination of these 6 bloggers that bring their ideas to life.
Shabby Chic Window Valance:
This cute window valance can be made in minutes, according to the blogger at One Good Thing By Jillee. She used fabric that comes in jelly roll strips.
These jelly rolls are commonly used by quilters. But she says that they are ideal for making this colorful valance.
Make IKEA Curtains Look Like A Million Bucks:
This couple wanted to hang curtains that were soft and pretty but also really cheap.
These are called pinch pleat curtains and are IKEA Tibast panels.
And how wonderful that there’s no sewing machine required!
Weathered Sign Window Treatment:
This is just a weathered sign used as a valance for the window.
If your window doesn’t look out over a street or busy area, you could get by with this window treatment. Or you could add blinds behind the sign.
Vintage Hankies 3 Ways:
This window treatment reminds me of the vintage linens I once had hanging in my kitchen window.
But in this instance, it is vintage hankies. Cute and colorful!
No Sew Burlap Window Treatment:
For those of you who love burlap (it makes me sneeze), this window treatment just might be for you.
You could also use any kind of fabric. But burlap gives it a vintage-y farmhouse look.
Pioneer Woman Curtains:
This whimsical window treatment is made up of The Pioneer Woman’s fabric napkins.
This would be easy to change if you got bored with the fabric napkins. You could use old hankies to switch up the look.
Coupled with the vintage mason jars on the shelf, this is really a sweet window treatment.
For myself, sometimes I’ve opted for regular buy-them-from-a-store curtains. And other times I’ve been more inspired and created various types of window treatments for my own home.
But I’m inspired by the 6 window treatments above.
Those were fun ideas! But I’m always surprised by the fact that most window treatments cover the top part of the windows where no one can sees inside… I’d rather cover the middle of the window…
Yes! That is what I’m looking for! I want to be able to see out of the window but not let the blistering southern sun in during certain parts of the day. That’s a hard one unless you go with the old fashioned top valance and short curtain bottom. Not a fan.
This was a fun post, Brenda! My favorites are the hankies and the coordinating cloth napkins. And I like the shelf put up under the napkins. I could use another shelf to put things on–I might look into having one put up at the half way point on the window over my kitchen sink.j
I like it when you find interesting things like this to show us. Thanks!
I like to use different sorts of window treatments too — quick and easy ones, that is. I have used both hankies and red bandanas as valances in the past. Currently I only have vinyl blinds up, and have rows of Cat’s Meow Village wooden houses sitting on the frames above the windows. (Those are decorative wooden houses made by an artist named Faline in Ohio that were really popular in the Ohio River Valley area in the ’80s and ’90s, and are still made today.) I really like the window featuring the shelf with the curtain below it. I love the colors in that photo too. Thanks for a fun post.
Hard to pick a favorite! I tend to like a valance with blinds to keep out the hot Florida sun.
I love the handkerchiefs. So cheerful! But I would definitely need a blind underneath for safety at night.
I love the blue and white strip roller shade also. Very nice indeed.~!
Right now most of my windows have cheap blinds and no window treatment because I just cannot figure out what it is that would please me. I really like the kitchen window with the shelf and the potted plants. This looks pretty easy and functional. Actually I like all of these window treatments; they show creativity and make the windows look happy.
loved this post! especially that sign. 🙂
I have used fabric shower curtains for years as window curtains.
they’re just the right length for large windows and they come in so many beautiful colors and prints or even solids and white. they just make me happy.
and the ‘hooks’ are beautiful now too. not those old plastic rings. it makes for easy opening and closing of the curtains and I love that since I’m a light and fresh air junkie.
I love the burlap ones and the last picture with the shelf for herbs. I love the look and smell of fresh herbs but when I have cooked with them I have been disappointed, maybe I just don’t use enough of them.
