Having a picnic basket opens up all kinds of possibilities to inspire a creative vignette in your home.

If you have a vintage picnic basket, you don’t have to use it just for picnics. You could go with a particular theme or add decor to it in a random fashion.
For instance, you could spray-paint the picnic basket blue and go for a seaside theme inside it. Or choose green and have a nature theme. Or of course just leave it in its vintage glory. I happened to spray-paint this one red years ago when I was painting just about everything red.
The sky is the limit on what you can do with a picnic basket. And not just put food in it for a picnic! You can use it for storage or decoration. Or both.
I’d been looking online for inspiration about decorating with baskets; of all the ways to repurpose them, when this idea came to me. I found all kinds of ideas for thrift store baskets that were upcycled.
I’ll have that for you next time. There are a lot of talented people out there that look at something in its current state, and see far beyond it.
Adding A Plant To Your Picnic Basket:
I realize that simply adding a house plant to my picnic basket isn’t all that creative. So I made it into a vignette within a vignette. I saw the plant, promptly popped it into the basket, and liked the way it looked. You could add decor like vintage washboards to the back, or drape linens across the top; whatever springs to mind.
So I’m bringing back the reds. I love my red decor. But I also like my relaxing shades of green. I always thought putting red and green together would be a tad too “Christmas-y.”
But I guess what they say about beauty being in the eye of the beholder is really true. I put these two red and green colors together and to heck with worrying about them conjuring up Christmas. This picnic basket decorating vignette is a good example of that.
Just go with what you like and it will work out.

The Hunt For A Home Continues:
To update you on the home search, we have been struggling to find something in my price range. Finding a diamond in the rough would probably be more likely. It just depends on how “rough!”
We’d like to have some of the big items ticked off, such as a house needed a new roof, and just deal with cosmetic changes. But real estate prices are high. And if a house is within my price range, it typically needs a good bit of work.
Kendra keeps saying: “Well, I don’t want you to live in an unsafe area.”
However, people have to live where they can afford to live, don’t they? And in a city, you have good parts of town and bad parts of town. Some of the prettiest little houses I see online are in what is considered “the bad side of town.”
I’ve never inherited money or received equity from selling a house. What I have for a down payment is just what I’ve managed to save over the past 5-6 years.
A Vignette Within A Vignette:
I added the candle as a nod to the fall season. You’ve seen me layer wooden cutting boards before. There’s just something about the composition of seeing the wood layered together that appeals to me. I added pitchers and dishes on a cake stand.

Some of you may remember that I purchased the red pitcher back in Tyler, Texas back when I lived there. I remember strolling around this antique mall. And I kept going back down the aisle where this red pitcher was.
I told myself it was too much. Fifteen dollars. But I just couldn’t leave without it, so I bought it. And luckily, I’ve managed to not break or chip it. I love the raised design on it. That’s what sold me on this pitcher. And it fits perfectly within my picnic basket vignette.
I’ve had the red picnic basket forever too. I spray-painted it red a long time ago. Back when I was spray-painting everything in the world red.

Dishes are a nice to add to a vignette because you can stand them up horizontally or lay them down vertically. Choosing colorful dishware and adding them to a white cake stand brings a color theme to your vignette.
The cake stand is from Target. I bought it some time ago. It’s very heavy. I’m always afraid I’m going to break it. I like the beaded look around the rim and it adds an elegant touch to my picnic basket vignette.

Red Is A Bold Color:
Red is a color that I consider spirited. It’s bold and sassy. It taps you on the shoulder and says “hey, look at me!”
I’m certainly not an extrovert or the kind of person that likes to draw attention to myself. But the color red has always called my name for some reason.
Red has the audacity to make a statement.

I like my neutrals for a background in terms of furniture. Neutrals give you a platform to use as a base. And then you can work your magic with other colors and change them up whenever you want.
You can go with green for a calming vibe or red when you want something to really stand out. Or put them together and who knows what it means!
Whatever colors you happen to like and are drawn to will work when decorating your home.

How wonderful of Kendra being concerned for your safety. Youโll find the perfect place.
My mom LOVED red and had the personality to go with it!! Me? red lit me up like a Christmas tree with many lights…and my fav was always blue…still is. Funny how we are drawn to certain colors and not others. I do find your arrangements pretty and inviting however…even the red ones. You pick good accompanying colors and I think it makes a big difference. Best wishes house hunting…we are still keeping an eye open too. I hear that a single person is moving into next door to us…I am afraid it will be a loud, noisy bee bopper…in which case that will drive us out quicker, if so.
Red definitely my favorite color. Your vignette is perfect, and I love it. I bet it makes you smile. LOL Enjoy the rest of your day.
It did make me smile, Darlene.
This may be silly but the fact that it made you smile made me smile.

Something to consider although timing would be of the essence.

Thanks for sending the link. But yes, time is of the essence.
The three most important things when purchasing a house are location, location and location. You can change everything but the location. Good luck!
Tis true!
Home hunting and buying isn’t easy right now. I just read an article in the Sunday Chicago Tribune about the housing market and how hard it is to find a house. One reason is because more Baby Boomers are staying put and not selling. They also mentioned the higher purchase price and mortage rates. You mentioned Kendra saying she didn’t want you in an unsafe area. Could you move to a town right outside the city instead of living in the city itself?
We’re looking into that too. But the prices are about the same.
I understand how difficult a house search is in this market. I am also looking for a place, but it will be in another state as the Northeast is simply too expensive. The whole search and another move are about overwhelming, but I need to move on. I wish you luck finding a place you will feel comfortable in.
Moving or preparing to move is a very stressful event. I feel for ya!
Wishing you the best in your journey to find a new home. Good to see you are enjoying decorating around the house. It looks great! Have a great day.
And now I’ve got to start packing things up. No decorating for awhile.
Iโve always loved gory red picnic basket. The weaving is beautiful. I have a huge Longaberger picnic basket and itโs just so heavy, now itโs storage for my household tools.
I didn’t know Longaberger baskets could be heavy. I’m only accustomed to regular wicker baskets.
